What happens when you think you’re throwing out rubbish but the boss see’s a skip bin full of $$$…? Well, you have a lesson in waste vs recovery, of course.
Sometimes it can be a relatively fine line between what should be discarded as waste and what can actually be reworked to fit an alternative purpose. This can be especially important in times like when money is tight, feedstock is low or hard to acquire, or costs are high, for example.
So, for us this meant pulling some ‘rubbish’ back out of the skip so we can reuse it for smaller components where possible. Now we will have a better idea of what can go into the skip and what needs some reimagineering to work for us in a different spot.
Dollars and sense (yes the term should be cents) will help our operation run smoother and for longer. … See MoreSee Less
This awesome email was received from an employer today. We reckon it’s pretty cool to get feedback like this. What do you think?
"Do you have counterparts in other parts of the country? My boss is really impressed with what you do and is wondering how he can employ staff locally in Tauranga that have come from a similar programme.
If you do have other set ups like this in Taupo or Bay of Plenty area (or any graduates that have family and may be looking to move back to those areas) can you let me know?". … See MoreSee Less

Today’s Te Mata Peak walk took us somewhere a little deeper than the usual trail. We slowed the pace, spent time among the Redwoods, and paused for a powerful reflection on life as it is now, and the futures we’re each working towards.
At first, there were a few confused faces but by the end, there was real insight, courage, and connection. Through handmade “sculptures,” everyone found a way to express what matters most: dreams for sport, whānau at the centre, and bold visions for amazing futures.
After sharing our creations, listening to each other, and celebrating everyone’s effort, we were off again and headed for the top. The blue trail was our challenge today. It was hard, hot, and heavy on the feet. But perseverance pulled us through and step by step, we made it. That’s two climbs to the top this week!
We wrapped up our short day with well-earned sandwiches at the picnic area near the old main gates. A big thank you to Joe and Nelson, those sandwiches were beautifully made and very much appreciated! … See MoreSee Less
Building Futures is about education and employment, but we’re also about unforgettable experiences!
This morning, Hawke’s Bay woke up to a magical dusting of snow across the higher peaks. So, we braved the cold and made the most of it heading out for a hikoi to play in the snow! Te Mata o Rongokako, Mt Kahuranaki, and Kohinurākau (Mt Erin) all looked absolutely stunning in their white winter coats.
There were smiles, laughter, and plenty of fun all around — a beautiful reminder that learning, connection, and joy can happen anywhere. Isn’t nature amazing?
